Improving fence security is a common concern for homeowners who want to protect their property, garden equipment, sheds and vehicles. A secure fence starts with strong posts and a solid structure. The more rigid the fence is, the harder it is for anyone to push through or climb over. Concrete posts with gravel boards, or reinforced timber or composite systems, create a sturdy boundary that is difficult to damage or force open.
Increasing the height of the fence, where permitted, is one of the most effective ways to improve security. A 1.8 metre or 2 metre fence provides a substantial barrier that most intruders will avoid due to the difficulty of scaling it unnoticed. If you prefer something less imposing visually, you can add a trellis section along the top. Trellis panels increase height while remaining lightweight, and they provide a fragile surface that breaks easily under weight, acting as a deterrent without reducing light.
The style of the fence matters too. Solid closeboard panels or composite panels offer little to no footholds, making them harder to climb. Vertical boards are more secure than horizontal slats, which can sometimes give small gaps that opportunists may use. Ensuring that the smooth side faces outward is also recommended, as it reduces climbing points.
Gate security is another important factor. A strong gate with proper hinges, locks and bolts prevents easy access into the garden. For side gates, consider adding a mortice lock or key locking bolt to increase protection. For driveway gates, height, weight and robust construction all play a part in discouraging unwanted access.
Good neighbourly visibility also helps. While a fence provides privacy, keeping sightlines clear within your garden can help reduce hiding spots. Motion activated lighting is another low cost, highly effective deterrent that works alongside fencing.
During your survey we can suggest the best combination of fencing height, style and reinforcements to suit your property and budget, ensuring you have a boundary that enhances both security and peace of mind.
