What is the difference between closeboard fencing and panel fencing?

Closeboard fencing and panel fencing are two of the most popular choices for domestic boundaries, but they differ in how they are built, how they look and how they perform over time. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right option for your property.

Closeboard fencing is built on site, piece by piece. It uses vertical feather edge boards fixed onto horizontal rails, which are supported by sturdy posts. This method creates a strong, solid structure with overlapping boards that provide excellent privacy. Because each part is individually fitted, closeboard fencing can be adapted to slopes and uneven ground more easily than pre made panels. It is also heavier and generally more durable, making it a great option for exposed gardens or those that need a long lasting, premium boundary.

Panel fencing, on the other hand, uses factory made panels that are slotted into timber or concrete posts. Panels come in a range of designs, including fully boarded, waney lap, double sided, decorative and slatted versions. Installation is usually faster because the panels are already assembled. This style offers a very clean and uniform appearance and is ideal when you want a consistent look along the boundary.

In terms of strength, heavy duty panels can perform very well, especially when combined with concrete posts and gravel boards. However, standard, lightweight panels may not withstand severe weather quite as effectively as closeboard construction. Closeboard tends to be the better long term option for gardens exposed to high winds, while panels are often chosen for their variety and faster installation.

Longevity depends on the materials used. Good quality closeboard fences with pressure treated boards and concrete posts can last well over a decade with proper maintenance. Composite or premium panels can provide similar durability with lower upkeep.
