What should I consider when choosing a new garden gate?

Choosing a new garden gate might seem simple, but selecting the right style, size and structure will make a big difference to how secure, practical and long lasting your gate will be. One of the first considerations is purpose. If your gate is purely for side access, you may want a straightforward, solid gate with strong hinges and a key operated lock. If the gate forms part of your main frontage or driveway, appearance becomes more important and you may prefer a design that enhances the look of your property.

Material choice is another key factor. Timber gates offer a traditional look and can be made to match existing fencing. Composite gates provide a low maintenance alternative with a more contemporary aesthetic. Metal framed gates or hybrid designs with composite or timber infill offer enhanced strength and are often used on driveways or areas requiring extra security.

Size and height are also important. Your gate must be wide enough for practical access while remaining structurally sound. For side gates, widths of around 900mm are common, but wider gates can be built to suit bins, bicycles or mobility equipment if needed. Driveway gates require careful measurement to ensure they open fully without obstruction, especially if your drive slopes or has limited turning space.

Security features should not be overlooked. A gate is only as strong as its fixings, so robust hinges, bolts and locks are essential. For side access gates, we often recommend key locking bolts or mortice locks. For driveway gates, secure latches, drop bolts and reinforced posts help keep the entrance stable and safe.

Visual style is the final consideration. Gates should complement the surrounding fence and the overall look of your home. From simple boarded gates to decorative top rails and modern composite styles, the right design can improve both kerb appeal and practicality.

When we survey your property, we take measurements, assess spacing, check ground levels and talk through your preferences to help you choose a gate that meets your needs for security, appearance and everyday ease of use.
