How do I choose between timber, composite and PVC fencing?

Choosing the right material for your fence depends on the look you want, how much maintenance you’re willing to do, and how long you want it to last. Timber fencing remains a classic choice and suits traditional homes, cottage gardens and rural settings throughout York. It offers warmth and character, and pressure-treated timber can provide excellent durability. However, timber does require periodic maintenance to stay at its best.

Composite fencing is the ideal low-maintenance option. Made from a blend of recycled wood fibres and plastics, it does not rot, splinter or warp in the same way as timber. Composite provides a sleek, modern appearance and stays looking good with minimal upkeep. It is especially popular in new build estates and contemporary garden designs where clean lines and long-term performance are key priorities.

PVC fencing is lightweight and easy to maintain, but it is less common in residential properties because it often lacks the natural appearance homeowners want. PVC can be suitable in certain functional applications, but composite offers a stronger and more visually appealing alternative.

When choosing your fence material, consider the style of your home, the exposure of your garden, your long-term maintenance preferences, and your budget. During a survey we will talk you through the pros and cons of each option and help you choose the material that best suits your needs.
