What is the best way to clean a composite fence?

Composite fencing is designed to be low maintenance, but like any outdoor surface, it benefits from occasional cleaning—especially after winter or periods of wet weather. The good news is that composite fencing cleans far more easily than timber, and you will never need to paint, stain or oil it.

The simplest and safest way to clean composite fencing is with warm water, a soft brush or sponge, and a mild detergent. Start by rinsing the fence with a hose to remove loose dirt. Then create a soapy solution and gently scrub the boards in the direction of their grain or texture. This loosens dirt, algae and stains without damaging the surface.

For more stubborn marks, such as bird droppings or grime in textured surfaces, you can use a diluted specialist composite cleaner. These are formulated to lift dirt without causing discolouration or scratching the boards.

Many people ask whether a pressure washer can be used. Pressure washers can be safe on composite fencing, but only at a low setting and from a sensible distance. Too much pressure may damage the surface or force water into the boards unnecessarily. If you choose to pressure wash, always test a small area first and keep the nozzle moving.

Regularly removing debris from the base of the fence—such as leaves or soil—helps prevent moisture buildup and keeps the boards looking fresh. Composite fencing resists mould far better than timber, but algae can still form in shaded or damp areas, so a quick clean in spring and autumn is usually enough.

With normal cleaning and care, composite fencing in York can stay looking almost new for many years, even in damp or shaded gardens.
