Can you install fences on shared driveways or alleyways?

Fencing shared access areas such as driveways, alleys or ginnels requires careful planning, clear boundaries and good communication with neighbours. In many cases, it is perfectly possible to install fencing in these spaces, but the boundary line must be respected and access must remain unobstructed.

The first step is confirming who owns the boundary. If the fence will sit exactly on the property line, both neighbours may need to agree to the installation. If the fence is installed slightly inside your boundary, you can usually proceed independently as long as access routes are not blocked.

For alleyways used by multiple properties, fencing must not obstruct movement, emergency access or utilities. Gates can often be fitted to secure private access areas, but they must be positioned in a way that respects everyone’s right of way. We can design gates that lock securely from the inside while still allowing access to those who need it.

Shared driveways often benefit from clear, well-defined boundaries. A well-installed fence helps reduce disputes, improves privacy and prevents incorrect parking or encroachment. We use strong posts and appropriate fixing methods to ensure the fence is stable without interfering with vehicle movement.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss legal boundaries, access requirements and practical design considerations to ensure your fence in a shared space is both functional and compliant.
