What type of concrete mix is used for fence posts?

For most fencing installations, we use a robust, fast-setting concrete mix that provides excellent support and cures quickly. The most common choice is post mix, a pre-blended concrete product designed specifically for securing posts. It sets rapidly—usually within 5 to 10 minutes—making it ideal for maintaining accuracy and alignment during installation.

For particularly heavy fences, large posts, exposed areas or challenging soil conditions, we sometimes use a stronger traditional concrete mix made from cement, ballast and water. This mixture cures more slowly but provides exceptional long-term stability.

The concrete is poured around the post and shaped into a slight mound at the top to shed water away, preventing moisture from pooling at the post base. Depth and width of the footing vary depending on fence height and soil conditions, but typically holes are around 600mm deep for standard fences.

Choosing the correct concrete ensures your fence remains stable for many years. During your survey we determine the ideal footing type and depth for your garden conditions.
