What type of fencing is best for dogs that like to dig?

Dogs that dig near fence lines can create escape routes surprisingly quickly, especially in soft or newly laid soil. The best approach is to choose a fence design that prevents digging at the base while remaining strong and secure above ground.

The most effective solution is to install concrete gravel boards beneath the fence panels. Gravel boards create a solid barrier at ground level, making it much harder for dogs to dig underneath. Deeper gravel boards or double-stacked boards offer additional protection for breeds that dig aggressively.

Closeboard fencing is particularly suitable because it creates a solid, gap-free boundary. The boards overlap tightly, and when installed with concrete posts and gravel boards, it forms a structure that is very difficult for dogs to compromise.

For gardens with persistent diggers, another option is to bury a sub-surface barrier along the fence line. This might include additional boards, wire mesh laid horizontally beneath the soil or compacted gravel. These prevent dogs from reaching the base of the fence through digging.

Gate areas should also be secured. Dogs often target the weakest points, so a well-fitted gate with no gaps underneath is essential. We can design gates specifically for pet-safe gardens with reinforced lower sections.

If you’re unsure how your garden layout affects your dog’s behaviour, we can assess the boundary and recommend the most secure and long-lasting fencing solution.
