Can I add trellis to the top of my fence?

Yes, adding trellis to the top of your fence is a great way to increase privacy, add decorative appeal and support climbing plants. Trellis extensions are popular in York because they offer a lighter, more attractive alternative to increasing fence height with solid panels.

From a practical standpoint, trellis allows you to increase the overall height of the boundary without significantly blocking light. This is ideal if your neighbours have higher patios, decking or extension windows overlooking your garden.

There are planning considerations too. Back garden fences can normally reach up to 2 metres without planning permission. If your existing fence is slightly under this height, adding a trellis extension may still keep you within permitted limits. If you are already at 2 metres, adding trellis might technically exceed the limit, but because trellis is open in design, many councils tolerate it. When in doubt, it’s worth checking guidance or keeping the additional height modest.

Trellis comes in various designs including square, diamond and contemporary slatted styles. Timber trellis blends well with closeboard or panel fencing, while composite trellis works perfectly with modern fencing systems.

When fitting trellis, we ensure it is attached securely using appropriate fixings and reinforced sections where needed. Poorly attached trellis can fail in windy conditions, so proper installation is essential.

If you want both privacy and style, trellis is an excellent addition that enhances your fence without overwhelming your garden.
