What is the difference between a gate post and a fencing post?

Gate posts and fence posts may look similar, but they perform different roles and must be chosen carefully to ensure long-term stability. Gate posts carry the weight of the gate, meaning they must be thicker, stronger and set deeper into the ground than standard fence posts.

A typical gate post is larger in cross-section—often 100x100mm or 125x125mm for timber, or a thicker concrete or composite option. Because a gate swings open and closed, the post experiences both downward pressure and sideways force. To handle this movement, gate posts require deeper and wider concrete footings.

Fence posts support panels and rails but do not bear the same level of dynamic force. They can be narrower and installed with slightly smaller footings.

Using a standard post for a gate often leads to sagging, leaning or structural damage over time. This is why proper gate posts are essential for any strong, long-lasting gate installation.

During your survey, we assess the size, weight and usage of your gate to choose the correct type of post and ensure the installation remains stable for many years.
