Can fencing help reduce draughts or wind tunnels in my garden?

Yes—fencing can significantly reduce draughts and wind tunnels when designed correctly. Many gardens in York experience wind channels created by houses, garages or open land. Smart fencing design helps redirect airflow, making seating areas more comfortable and reducing the chill factor.

Solid fences such as closeboard or composite panels offer the most effective wind blocking. They create a barrier that stops wind from sweeping across the garden, especially when installed in the direction of the prevailing wind.

However, in extremely exposed gardens, a fully solid fence may trap wind and create turbulence. In those cases, semi-solid slatted fencing with narrow gaps allows controlled airflow, reducing pressure on the structure while still calming strong gusts.

Taller fences—up to the permitted 2 metres—are naturally better at blocking wind at seated height. Trellis sections can also help deflect airflow without making the boundary too solid.

During your survey, we analyse garden orientation, surrounding buildings and prevailing wind direction to recommend the best design for reducing draughts and creating a more sheltered outdoor space.
