Uneven or sloped gardens require specialised fencing techniques to ensure a secure, straight and visually attractive boundary. The two main installation methods for sloped ground are stepping and raking, and the best choice depends on the type of fencing and the height difference along the boundary.
Stepped fencing involves installing each panel or section at a slightly different height, creating a clean, stair-like appearance along the slope. This works especially well with solid panel fencing and closeboard fencing. Stepped fencing ensures each panel remains level while still following the slope of the land.
Raked fencing, often used with closeboard or slatted designs, adjusts the angle of the boards to match the slope, creating a smooth, continuous boundary. This is ideal for gardens with gradual gradients because it avoids the “stepped” look and provides a more seamless appearance.
Concrete posts, composite posts or heavy-duty timber posts all work well on sloped ground, provided they are installed at the correct depths. The key is ensuring that each post is set vertically and securely so the fence stays aligned over time.
For steep slopes or awkward layouts, custom-built closeboard fencing offers the most flexibility because it is constructed on site, allowing for precise adjustments.
