Can I attach lighting or outdoor features to my fence?

Yes—many homeowners attach outdoor lighting, planters and decorative features to fences to create a more inviting and functional garden space. However, it must be done safely and without compromising the structural integrity of the fence.

Lightweight features such as solar lights, battery-powered fixtures and hanging planters are generally safe to attach to most timber fences. Use appropriate fixings and avoid placing excessive weight on a single rail or board. This helps prevent boards from bowing or loosening over time.

For heavier features, such as wired lights, trellis screens or large planters, it’s important to ensure the fence can support them without strain. Closeboard fencing is more suitable for heavier loads because it has stronger rails and thicker boards. Standard lap panels may not support significant weight safely.

With composite fencing, only accessories designed specifically for composite materials should be used. Composite boards are durable but can crack if drilled incorrectly or overloaded.

If you want to install lighting along a boundary, consider using post-mounted lights rather than attaching fixtures directly to panels. This keeps weight on the structural posts instead of the boards.
