Are there fencing options that allow light through but still offer privacy?

Yes—there are several fencing styles that strike a balance between allowing light in and still offering a sense of privacy. This is particularly useful for smaller gardens, patios that need natural light, or outdoor seating areas that feel overshadowed by solid fencing.

One of the best options is narrow-slat fencing. With smaller gaps between each slat, the fence lets light filter through but obscures direct lines of sight. This creates a soft, diffused privacy effect. Horizontal slatted designs are especially popular in York’s modern gardens and new builds.

Louvre-style panels are another excellent choice. These panels use angled slats that direct light into the garden while deflecting views from neighbours or passers-by. They offer a very contemporary look and work brilliantly around patios and terraces.

Decorative screens with laser-cut or patterned designs also provide partial privacy. While not fully solid, they create enough visual breakup to screen sitting areas or garden buildings. They can be used as standalone panels, features, or integrated into larger fencing layouts.

Adding trellis to the top of a solid fence is another highly effective approach. Trellis increases height without blocking light and also provides structure for climbing plants such as jasmine, clematis or evergreen climbers. Over time, these plants create additional natural screening.

Composite fencing systems also offer semi-solid designs, combining the durability of composite with lighter, modern aesthetics.

We can recommend the best option based on the orientation of your garden, your privacy requirements and how much natural light you want to retain.
