Many homeowners assume that fencing can only be installed during spring or summer, but this is not true. We install fencing throughout the year, including during winter, provided weather conditions are safe and the ground is workable. In fact, autumn and winter are often ideal times to install new fencing because demand is slightly lower, meaning quicker lead times and shorter waiting lists.
Light rain does not prevent us from installing fencing, and the majority of winter fencing jobs go ahead without issue. Timber and composite materials can be fitted in cold weather, and concrete sets perfectly well in low temperatures, provided it is not freezing.
There are, however, certain conditions where work must pause. Heavy, persistent rain that saturates the ground can make digging post holes difficult and unsafe. Likewise, frozen ground or severe storms make installation impractical. In these cases, we may delay the job slightly to ensure the fence is installed correctly and to a high standard.
The type of fencing makes little difference to whether it can be installed in winter. Closeboard, panel fencing, composite systems and gates can all be fitted year-round. If your existing fence has been damaged by winter storms, early installation may actually prevent further problems, such as panels collapsing onto lawns, plants or public paths.
During your survey, we assess the condition of the soil, drainage, access and exposure to determine the best installation window. If you book in winter and the weather turns unexpectedly bad, we’ll keep you informed and rearrange promptly where necessary.
York’s weather is unpredictable, but with sensible planning and professional installation practices, winter fencing is absolutely possible and often the most convenient choice for homeowners.
