In most cases, you do not need planning permission to install or replace a fence in your back garden. UK regulations typically allow fences up to 2 metres in height without requiring permission. This applies to the majority of York properties.
However, there are exceptions:
- If your fence is adjacent to a highway or public footpath, the height limit may be reduced to 1 metre.
- If your property is listed, within a conservation area or has restrictive covenants, additional permissions may apply.
- If increasing the height of an existing fence beyond the permitted limit, planning permission may be required.
Trellis extensions are usually acceptable, even above 2 metres, because they are open in structure. However, if you need full privacy screening above 2 metres, we recommend checking local guidance.
During your survey, we can advise whether planning considerations apply and help you choose a design that complies with local regulations.
