How do gravel boards protect a fence and do I really need them?

Gravel boards play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of your fencing, and while they are not legally required, they are highly recommended for virtually all fencing installations. A gravel board sits at the bottom of the fence, between the ground and the main timber or composite panels. Its purpose is to protect the most vulnerable part of the fence from direct contact with soil, moisture and rot.

The area where timber touches the ground is the first to fail. Rainwater splashes onto the base of panels, soil retains moisture, and frost can cause repeated expansion and contraction. Over time, this leads to timber decay, weakening the entire structure. By lifting the panels off the ground, gravel boards create a physical barrier that prevents this damage. Concrete gravel boards offer the longest lifespan and need no maintenance. Composite gravel boards are another strong option and work especially well with modern fencing systems.

Gravel boards also help to level out slight unevenness in the ground, providing a consistent base for panels or closeboard bays. In gardens with slight gradients, multiple gravel boards can be stepped neatly to keep the fence line smart and uniform. They also reduce the risk of soil pushing against panels, which is especially important in gardens with raised flowerbeds or earth banks.

Gravel boards are beneficial for pets too. Dogs frequently scratch or dig at the base of fences, and a strong gravel board significantly reduces the risk of your pet creating gaps or damaging panels. For gardens where digging is a real concern, deeper gravel boards or additional kick boards can be added for extra protection.

Whether you choose concrete, timber or composite gravel boards will depend on the style of your fence. During our survey we explain which type will best complement your chosen design and offer the longest service life. While gravel boards do add a little to the overall cost, they save far more in the long term by protecting your fence from premature damage.
