How do I maintain a timber fence and keep it looking good?

Timber fencing can last many years with proper care. One of the most important steps is treating the wood regularly with a high-quality preservative, stain or paint. This protects the timber from moisture, UV rays and fungus. Most fences benefit from treatment every two to three years.

Keeping the base of the fence clear is also important. Soil, leaves and plant material should not be piled against the boards, as this traps moisture and accelerates decay. Installing gravel boards helps protect the base of the panels from rot.

Regular inspections help catch problems early. Look for loose nails, damaged boards or wobbling posts. Addressing small issues promptly prevents them from turning into larger repairs.

Cleaning the fence with a soft brush and mild detergent helps remove dirt, algae and mildew. Avoid overly aggressive pressure washing, which can damage the grain of the timber.

With sensible care, a timber fence can remain strong and attractive for many years.
