One of the most common questions we are asked is how much a new fence will cost. The honest answer is that it depends on several factors, but we can give you a sensible guide so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote.
The biggest factor is the length of the fence. Fencing is usually priced per metre or per panel, so a long boundary will naturally cost more than a short run along one side of a garden. The height of the fence also has a big impact on cost. A standard 1.8 metre (6 foot) privacy fence will use more materials and take slightly longer to install than a lower decorative fence at the front of a property.
The type of fence you choose is another key factor. Closeboard fencing, feather edge panels, decorative slatted panels, composite systems and post and rail all have different material and labour requirements. As a general rule, simple timber panel fencing with timber posts is usually the most budget friendly option, while higher end composite fencing or heavy duty closeboard with concrete posts and gravel boards will sit further up the price scale. Gates, awkward corners, changes in level and the need to remove an old fence can also affect the final figure.
Access plays a part too. If we can bring materials straight into the garden through a side gate and work in a clear, open space, installation will be quicker than a job where everything has to be carried through the house or where there are many obstacles such as old shrubs, sheds or uneven ground.
