What are the pros and cons of horizontal fencing compared to vertical fencing?

Horizontal and vertical fencing both offer strong, practical boundary solutions, but they differ significantly in appearance, structure and suitability depending on your garden style. Understanding the strengths of each helps you make an informed decision for your York property.

Vertical fencing, such as closeboard or vertical panel fencing, is the most traditional option and the most widely used across the UK. The boards overlap vertically, meaning water naturally runs down the length of the timber, reducing moisture retention. This increases durability and reduces the risk of rot. Vertical fences are also better at handling wind because the design allows pressure to be distributed evenly along the posts and rails. They suit almost all property styles, from period homes to new builds.

Horizontal fencing, particularly slatted designs, has become very popular in modern gardens. The clean, linear appearance complements contemporary patios, garden rooms and extensions. Horizontal fencing can make a garden appear wider because the eye naturally follows the line of the boards. It also allows for controlled light flow depending on the spacing between slats.

However, horizontal fencing does require more structural care. Boards must be supported correctly to prevent sagging over time, especially on longer runs. Good-quality materials such as composite or treated timber are essential. In very windy gardens, horizontal designs may need additional reinforcement to reduce movement.

In terms of privacy, vertical closeboard fencing provides complete coverage with no gaps. Horizontal fencing can provide anything from full privacy to semi-open designs depending on slat spacing.
