What fencing works best for homes backing onto fields or open land?

Homes that back onto fields, farmland or open countryside face unique challenges such as strong winds, increased exposure and the need for enhanced security. The best fencing options for these properties are those that offer strength, durability and long-term stability.

Closeboard fencing with concrete posts is the most reliable choice. The overlapping boards distribute wind pressure evenly, while concrete posts provide strong anchoring in exposed conditions. Concrete gravel boards further protect the fence from moisture and soil erosion.

Composite fencing is an excellent alternative for modern homes. Composite boards are dense, rigid and highly resistant to weather, making them suitable for open, windy environments. Their minimal maintenance requirements make them ideal for long-term performance.

If maintaining a view of the fields is important, semi-solid designs such as slatted fencing with narrow gaps can offer visibility while reducing wind pressure on the structure.

For security, increasing fence height up to the permitted limit of 2 metres discourages access from open land. Reinforced gates and strong locks further protect your garden.

During your survey, we assess exposure levels and recommend the most effective materials and design features to ensure your fence stands up to weather and long-term outdoor conditions.
