Choosing the right fencing when you have pets is important for their safety and your peace of mind. If you have dogs, the goal is to create a boundary they cannot jump over, squeeze through or dig under. The most reliable option is solid closeboard fencing, which has no gaps and provides a strong barrier even for larger or energetic dogs. With the boards overlapping and fixed onto solid rails, closeboard offers excellent strength and security.
Panel fencing can also be suitable for pets, provided you choose a heavy duty style with no gaps near the base. Using concrete gravel boards helps to raise the panels off the ground, reducing the likelihood of dogs damaging the bottom of the fence or digging through weakened timber. Panels with a fully boarded design are preferable over decorative styles with open sections.
Fence height is an important consideration. Many small and medium sized dogs are contained effectively by a 1.2 metre or 1.5 metre fence, while larger or more agile breeds may require a full 1.8 metre boundary to prevent jumping. We can discuss heights during your survey and recommend the safest option based on your dog’s breed and behaviour.
Gates should not be overlooked. A secure gate with a strong latch, key lock or bolt will prevent pets pushing it open or slipping through gaps. Self closing hinges can also be fitted to help avoid accidental escape.
For gardens where digging is a concern, we can install deeper gravel boards or partially sunk kick boards at the base of the fence. This strengthens the lower section and makes it much harder for pets to burrow underneath.
Composite fencing is another reliable option for pet owners, as it does not splinter and is more resistant to chewing or scratching. It also provides a smooth, solid surface that prevents climbing.
We always encourage pet owners to explain any behavioural tendencies during the survey so we can tailor the fence design to your needs and ensure your pets remain safe and secure in your garden.
