What type of fencing is best for preventing children from climbing over?

Choosing fencing that discourages climbing is essential for families who want a safe and secure garden. The best fencing for stopping children from climbing has minimal footholds, smooth surfaces and sufficient height.

Closeboard fencing is one of the best options because the boards run vertically with no horizontal rails exposed on the outside. This makes it difficult for children to find places to grip or step onto.

Composite fencing also works well due to its smooth, rigid surface. The boards interlock tightly, leaving no gaps or rails that can be used as climbing points.

Slatted fencing with narrow spacing can be acceptable in some cases, but wide horizontal gaps can encourage climbing, so the design choice is important.

The height of the fence also matters. The maximum height without planning permission in most York rear gardens is 2 metres, which is usually tall enough to prevent accidental climbing or scaling.

If you want additional safety features, trellis sections with narrow openings can be used at the top of the fence. These add height but make climbing more difficult without creating a heavy or enclosed appearance.
